Huawei made official two new terminals, the Huawei Nova 2 and the Huawei Nova 2 Plus. Two devices aimed at the so-called mid-high range. The Huawei Nova 2 Plus comes with several new features regarding his younger brother. A larger screen, more storage capacity and more battery. But it also keeps all the good Nova 2, like the double camera. Today we will compare the Huawei Nova 2 Plus with last year’s high-end model, the Huawei P9. Now that the latter has gone down in price, they could become direct rivals. We put together the Huawei Nova 2 Plus and the Huawei P9.
Although we are facing two terminals of the same brand, they offer very different designs. The Huawei Nova 2 Plus has a more rounded, more modern design. It has a fully metal body and the fingerprint reader located at the back. Also in this back part, they emphasise the two metallic bands of the ends, that remind us much to the Apple iPhone.
At the front, we will have nothing more than the Huawei logo. The control buttons are integrated into the screen, leaving a front completely ‘clean’.
The complete dimensions of the Huawei Nova 2 Plus have not been confirmed. As for the colours, it seems that Huawei bets on a young audience. The terminal will arrive in colours as striking as green, pink gold, black, gold and blue.
In the design of the Huawei P9, it is noticed that the terminal takes a year in the market. Not a bad design, but it looks somewhat less updated. Even so, we have a metallic finish, with a front also very clean.
The fingerprint reader is also located in the back. It stands out for the glass finish that we have at the top, protecting the area of the cameras. This area has a different colour to the rest, so it stands out even more.
The complete dimensions of the Huawei P9 are 145 x 70.9 x 6.95 millimetres, weighing 144 grammes. Surely one of these data has caught your attention. Yes, we mean the extreme thinness of the terminal, less than 7 millimetres thick.
In terms of colour, the Huawei P9 features two-color play. On one side we have the colour of the front, which can be black or white. And, on the other hand, we have the colour of the back and sides. This can be chosen in up to four shades: dark gray, silver, blue and red.
We already know that Huawei is not very given to risk on the screens of its terminals. This year we have only seen a higher resolution on the Huawei P10 Plus. This conservative line is maintained in the new terminal. The Huawei Nova 2 Plus features a 5.5-inch IPS panel with Full HD resolution. The density stays at 400 dpi.
The Huawei P9 features a 5.2-inch panel and Full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. That gives us a density of 423 dots per inch. But more important is that the panel is capable of achieving a color saturation of 96%, which translates into more vivid and defined colors. In short, a screen that perfectly complies without being excellent.
Processor, memory and operating system
As a good high-end terminal, the Huawei P9 incorporated the most powerful processor of the last generation of Huawei. In the Huawei Nova 2 Plus the company has opted for a somewhat less powerful chip. We are talking about a proprietary HiSilicon Kirin 659 eight-core processor at a speed of 2.36 GHz. Accompanying this processor we have 4 GB of RAM and no less than 128 GB of internal storage. If for any reason we did not have enough, we can expand it with a microSD card.

The Huawei P9, as we said, had one of the most powerful technical ensembles of last year. Specifically, we speak of the Kirin 955 processor with eight cores, four cores at 2.5 GHz and the other four at 1.8 GHz. Accompanying this chip includes 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. This can be extended by microSD card.
As for the operating system, the Huawei Nova 2 Plus will arrive with Android 7.0 Nougat. The Huawei P9 was launched with Android 6.0, of course. However, in January this year, Huawei announced the upgrade to Android 7.0 Nougat.
Camera and multimedia
The double camera continues to gain strength in the market. Even lower-end terminals, such as the ZTE Blade V8, include a dual purpose. So the Huawei Nova 2 Plus could not be less. The main camera includes a 12-megapixel lens and an 8-megapixel lens. The first has an aperture f / 1.8 and is a wide angle. The other is designed for long distances. That is, incorporate a portrait mode similar to the iPhone 7 Plus.
But if the main camera has not surprised you, surely the front camera does. To realize selfies we will have a target of no less than 20 megapixels. A very unusual resolution, which exceeds even the 16 megapixel Samsung Galaxy A5 2017.
The Huawei P9 incorporates a double camera system signed by Leica. That is, we have a color sensor and a monochrome. However, this is an earlier version than we see this year. In this model both sensors have 12 megapixel resolution and aperture f / 2.2 . It also includes a hybrid autofocus system.
The front camera mounting the Huawei P9 offers an 8-megapixel resolution and an f / 2.4 aperture. This camera is capable of recording video with Full HD resolution and also features the Beauty mode, a classic of the brand’s terminals.
Autonomy and Connectivity
The battery is really important in mobiles with some power and screen size. The Huawei Nova 2 Plus has a 3,340-milliampere battery with fast charge inside. It is a capacity that is included within the standard for current mobile phones of a similar size. Although we have not had occasion to test the terminal, we understand that with this capacity and its resolution should endure perfectly the full day.
As for connections, the Huawei Nova 2 Plus has USB type C and a 3.5 mm audio port. We also have support for 4G networks, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth and assume that NFC, although it has not been confirmed yet.
The Huawei P9 incorporates a battery of 3,000 milliamps. However, despite having a smaller screen, in our test thoroughly the terminal endured hardly the full day with a slightly intensive use. In the test AnTuTu got a score of 6,687 points. It is something we have not seen in the Huawei P10, so we understand that the Nova 2 Plus will also come very well optimised.
Conclusions and price
We are facing two very similar terminals in many things, but not the same. The design of the Huawei Nova 2 Plus is something more current, more modern. It has more rounded lines and a more uniform finish. That does not mean that the design of the Huawei P9 is very good. As we always say, here comes the taste of each user.
As for the screen, both have the same resolution. The difference is that the screen of the Huawei Nova 2 Plus is bigger than the one of the P9. Again, each user will have to rate it.
At the technical level we have serious doubts about what the winner would be. The Huawei P9 processor is more powerful, but this terminal has less RAM. So we would have to wait for the performance tests to decant the balance to one side or the other. What is clear is that both will perform perfectly with almost any application.
In the photographic section we have two different proposals. Yes, both terminals have dual sensors, but with different functions. In the Huawei P9 we have the Leica solution, ie a monochrome sensor whose function is to get sharper images.
In the Huawei Nova 2 Plus we have a double sensor that will serve to achieve the well-known bokeh effect. As we have not yet been able to test the Huawei Nova 2 Plus we can not compare the quality of the images taken with both devices. But it is good to know the difference between these two systems.
Where it shines the Nova 2 Plus is in the front camera. Huawei has put all the meat on the grill to introduce a high-resolution camera. We will have to wait to see the actual result.
As for the autonomy, failing to test the new model, we think that the Huawei Nova 2 Plus will be ahead. As we said, the Huawei P9 misses an excessive battery consumption. In the Huawei P10 the company fixed it, so it would be illogical to think that those same savings measures have not been applied in the Nova 2 Plus.
And we end with the price. The Huawei Nova 2 Plus will hit the market with a price that will be around 380 euros. At least that’s the price it will have in China. We will have to see how it really translates into euros.
The Huawei P9 was launched to the market with an official price of 600 euros. However, currently we can find it for 400 euros looking good on the Internet. So, as you can see, the price will not be a determining factor when deciding for one team or another. And which do you like the most?
