regedit_4

When the desktop icons are messed up it is because there is a bad setup in the Windows registry. By this, I mean that the icons are cluttered by changing places or separating. Usually, happens when you turn on your computers that you find them different from how they were or when you open a game or full-screen application. The problem is solved by doing a few simple steps.

First, to ensure that the procedure works correctly or there is no loss, it is recommended that you be an administrator user.

Steps to take if desktop icons are messed up

First, we must open the Windows registry editor. You can search for it by typing “regedit” in the search box or by running the Windows + R keys and typing “regedit“.

regedit_2

Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-> SOFTWARE-> MICROSOFT-> WINDOWS-> CurrentVersion-> Policies and then click “Explorer“. Then on the right side there is “NoActiveDesktopright-click on it and then click “Modify.”

regeditThen where it says “Value information” type 0 and then click where it says “OK or Accept“.

regedit_3After that, the problem will be solved. If the folder “Explorer” does not appear to you it is probably because you are not an admin user.

If somehow the process I explained above does not work open the notepad and paste the following code in it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer]
“NoActiveDesktop” = dword: 00000000

When you paste the code in the notebook in the menu at the top click “File” click where it says “Save As“:

Then save the file with the name “register.reg“. Keep it in a location where you can easily find it, preferably on the desktop.

regedit_4When you save it, look for the file and execute it, it will ask if you are sure, click yes or accept.

Register in windows registryWhen you do that you will have the problem solved.

To explain clearly this tutorial solves the following problems:

  • Desktop icons are cluttered
  • Desktop icons change
